NACC Region 4 holds forum on overloaded truck bribery

The Office of the Nation Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) Region 4 held a workshop to gather suggestions regarding the giving and receiving of bribes related to overloads trucks in Mukdahan Province.

On June 17, 2025, Mr.Prateep Juthasorn, Deputy Secretary-General of the NACC Region 4, presided over the opening ceremony of the Together against Bribery (TaB) project of the NACC Region 4, which included a site visit to monitor progress in resolving bribery issues and a workshop on the topic of "Guidelines for Preventing and Receiving Bribes Related to Overloaded Trucks in Mukdahan Province" at Ploy Palace Hotel  Mueang Mukdahan District, Mukdahan Province. Participants included NACC officials, civil servants from government agencies in Mukdahan Province, and members of the STRONG-Sufficiency Economy Against Corruption network.

The problem of corruption related to overloaded trucks has been a long-standing issue in Thai society. Although government agencies have continuously attempted to solve this problem, it persists because operators increase the truck load to reduce transportation costs. As roads are designed to support a certain level of truck weight, overloading beyond the road's capacity inevitably damages the road surface and structure, as well as posing a danger to road users. This results in significant repair and maintenance costs.

The NACC Office, as the agency responsible for preventing and suppressing corruption, recognized the problem and the resulting damage. It proposed measures to prevent corruption related to overloaded trucks to the Cabinet and has continuously monitored the implementation of these measures. However, overloaded trucks remain an unresolved problem, and there have been news reports of officials neglecting their duties or engaging in corrupt practices, such as accepting bribes.

To handle problems, the NACC Region 4 office has implemented the TaB project, including site visits to monitor progress and a workshop. This workshop aimed to gather opinions on the topic, understand the current situation, facts, operational results, and obstacles in implementing the NACC's recommendations effectively. The goal is to prevent and resolve corruption in accordance with the law, ultimately aiming to reduce the number of corruption cases, make Thailand corruption-free, and improve Thailand's Corruption Perceptions Index, as per the national strategic plan's anti-corruption agenda.
