The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) has collaborated with community forest networks in Roi Et province to form the 2nd network of “STRONG” aimed at protecting forests and natural resources in line with the NACC’s anti-corruption policy. One of the tasks of the newly-formed network is to provide leads corruption related to community forests.
Mr. Anucha Phuengbunsri, Director of the NACC Provincial Office Roi Et, states that there are many abundant community forests in Roi Et with a perfect ecological system, flora and fauna that need to be preserved. Recently, the provincial NACC office decided to set up a new “STRONG” network in the province and held talks with leaders of community forest groups in Roi Et to share experiences on forest conservation.
There are over 1,000 Rai of forest lands and 1,000 Siamese rosewood trees in community forests in Roi Et.
The 2nd STRONG network came after the establishment of the 1st one in Suwannaphum district. Mr. Anucha says STRONG has set a good example of forest management with unity, volunteerism and awareness of natural conservation.
The provincial NACC office and STRONG have organized many activities to protect community forests such as building firebreaks for forest fires and educating children about natural resources in the forests. The children also learn about the problem of illegal logging and how to inspect traces of encroachment on preserved forests.
At the national level, the NACC has educated community forest networks on legislations related to natural resources, corruption prevention and encroachment on community forests.
The NACC Roi Et Office has planned to expand its 117 community forest groups in a bid to help strengthen the STRONG network. The objective of this initiative is to conserve natural resources sustainably and stand vigilant against corruption related to forest resources and encroachment.
