The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) has rolled out measures to prevent school admissions bribery and instructed provincial NACC offices to closely monitor admissions for the academic year 2023 for corruption red flags.

NACC Secretary-General Niwatchai Kasemmongkol said bribery would likely take place from March – April every year when school admissions were open. School admissions bribery is a form of corruption and the bribe is usually a lot higher than the tuition, he said.

The secretary-general raised the question that why parents are willing to pay a large sum of money instead of helping their children focus more on the study.

In many cases, local high-ranking officials asked for bribes themselves and forced the school to accept the student who bribed them.

School admissions bribery created a cycle of corruption, the secretary-general said. The NACC had proposed anti-school admissions corruption measures to the Cabinet in hopes to suppress corruption in the civil service, he said. The measures target schools under the Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC).

The NACC’s proposal asks that OBEC consider not accepting students on “special conditions” which can lead to bribery, and instead focus on giving students a chance to go to school near home. Every school is required to inform parents of its expenses and details of financial contributions collected from them.

Minister of Education Treenuch Thienthong has announced a ban on school admissions bribery and threatened to impose the maximum punishment on anyone involved in it.
