BANGKOK, 3 April 2023 -- The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) is pushing for the enactment of the Anti-Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation (Anti-SLAPP) draft act to protect people engaged in activities related to corruption inspection. Hearings will be conducted with various sectors such as the Ministry of Justice and the Civil Service Commission to review the law.
Intended to prevent legal proceedings against people who have exposed corruption, the Anti-SLAAP law creates a tool for the promotion of public participation to fight corruption, the NACC says. The law also seeks to prevent the defendant in a corruption case from abusing legal proceedings to intimidate and silence criticism.
People who have spoken out to expose corruption or express their opinions against those alleged of corruption might face legal actions in civil, criminal, or administrative cases, the NACC says.
The Anti-SLAPP law aligns with the Constitution of the Kingdom of Thailand B.E. 2560, the 4th National Plan on Human Rights, the National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights Phase 1 (B.E. 2562 - 2565), and the United Nations Convention against Corruption.
The NACC states further that it believes that once the Anti-SLAPP law comes into force, the public will be confident in legal mechanisms that can protect them and encourage the fight against corruption by the people
